Eastern Counties Rugby Union Memorial Event

ON 29 August 2021, the Eastern Counties Rugby Union Memorial event was held at Wymondham RFC to remember club members and supporters lost to the rugby family during the pandemic.

To mark the occasion there were matches for women and men representing Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.

The day kicked off with combined Suffolk and Cambridgeshire Women v Norfolk Women. An all action game finished with Norfolk winning the President’s Memorial Cup by three tries to nil.

This was followed by lunch attended by 70 guests including Alan Line (treasurer) and Wooden Spoon Eastern Counties Chairman, Seamus Farrelly.

ECRU (Eastern Counties Rugby Union) President John Winders presented a Mark of Remembrance before lunch. Seamus gave the guests a short update on the Wooden Spoon region’s work after the lunch. There was a raffle and bid auction which raised over £1,000.00 for Wooden Spoon Eastern Counties.

This was followed by the match between Suffolk and Cambridgeshire men v Norfolk men. It was a very fast flowing game with players only just returning to play after the long lay off and quite a few gave it their all. The final result was a win for Norfolk of 53-0.

Wooden Spoon Eastern Counties would like to thank all at ECRU who arranged this great day and also to all those who contributed generously to the sum raised.
