The need for speed – specially adapted two-seater Go-karts

Wooden Spoon Bristol, Bath and Somerset has funded two specially adapted two-seater go-karts, which have been designed to cater for children and young people with special additional needs enabling them to experience the thrill of go-karting in a safe and fun environment together with their family.

The official opening of the Disability Karts took place last night at the go karting track in Bristol with Bristol Bears stars Harry Thacker and Piers O’Conor unveiling the plaque. After the formalities took place there was a highly competitive Go-Karting tournament that saw 15 teams of 4 drivers each battling it out to win their place on the podium.
With representative from the Bristol Bears Community Foundation, some of the Bristol Bears mens rugby team and many rugby players and Wooden Spoon supporters, the evening had a fun, community feel.
Whilst there was a healthy competitiveness in the arena, it demonstrated the spirit of the rugby community coming together to support vulnerable children.
David Brind, Community Development Director at Absolutely Together explains why Wooden Spoon funding is so important:
“We support families that have children with additional needs by providing them with free leisure activities. Our programmes are more important now than ever with the current cost of living crisis. A lot of these families don’t have the means to participate in activities together as a family. We need money and support to be able to provide programmes for these families and with the generous donation from Wooden Spoon it’s enabled us to buy two specially adapted go-karts that give children with disabilities the opportunity to participate in activities with their family. Our aim is to put smiles on faces, and we certainly do that. We are hoping to deliver 6,000 sessions to the local community in Bristol per year.”
