Six Friends Set Sights on Mont Blanc to Change Young Lives

There are few challenges more demanding than climbing Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Western Europe. This summer, six friends are taking on that challenge to raise vital funds for Wooden Spoon, helping create life-changing opportunities for children and young people with disabilities or facing disadvantage.

Craig, Alex, Ant, James B, James S and Danny first met while serving in the Army. United by friendship, resilience and a passion for adventure, the team has completed a number of challenges together over the years. Now, they are preparing to take on their biggest test yet – reaching the 4,810-metre summit of Mont Blanc.

This is far more than a challenging hike. Climbing Mont Blanc is a serious alpine expedition that requires months of preparation, physical endurance and careful planning. The team will follow the iconic Goûter Route, one of the mountain’s most demanding routes, where long days, high altitude and exposed terrain combine to create a formidable challenge.

Before attempting the summit, the team will climb Gran Paradiso, a 4,061-metre peak in Italy. This essential stage allows them to acclimatise to the altitude, practise glacier travel and rope techniques, and prepare for the physical and mental demands of Mont Blanc.

The climb itself includes some of the mountain’s most challenging sections, including the Grand Couloir, where frequent rockfall means timing and teamwork are critical. Summit day begins in the early hours of the morning, with the team climbing by headtorch through freezing temperatures of around -20°C, while wind chill can push conditions below -30°C.

As they make their way towards the summit along the exposed Bosses Ridge, every step will demand focus, determination and resilience. With steep drops on either side and thin mountain air making every movement more difficult, the final push will test both body and mind.

This year’s expedition presents an even greater challenge. Unseasonably warm conditions have weakened snow bridges that can conceal deep crevasses, while thawing ice has increased the risk of rockfall along parts of the route. These changing alpine conditions make experience, preparation and teamwork more important than ever.

While the climb will push the team to their limits, their motivation is clear. Every step they take will help raise vital funds for Wooden Spoon, enabling more children and young people with disabilities or facing disadvantage to access safe, inclusive spaces where they can play, learn, thrive and be safe.

Special thanks to LMAX, OMERTA, Island, Ionics, Cloudstrike, Dechra and Global Service Group Ltd for their generous support in providing the specialist equipment and kit needed to help make this incredible challenge possible.
