Every Child Deserves Their Moment: A Tag Fest Story That Says It All

3 out of 4 children with disabilities don’t get the opportunity to play sport at School, Wooden Spoon is helping give those children more opportunities through Tag Fest.

At Wooden Spoon, we believe every child deserves the chance to play. Stories like this remind us exactly why Tag Fest is so special.

One parent shared the experience of their child, a young player with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) from Gosford, who attended Tag Fest for the very first time. It was not only his first Tag Fest, but also his first fuller experience of tag rugby.

At the start of the day, he was understandably uncertain. He followed the ball around the pitch, watched the other players closely and spent time learning the rules while finding his place within the game.

But as the day unfolded, something remarkable happened.

Supported by encouraging teammates, dedicated coaches and an atmosphere built on kindness and inclusion, his confidence grew with every minute. He began carrying the ball, making passes and getting more involved in the action. Every touch of the ball was another step towards understanding the game and, more importantly, feeling like he belonged.

Then came the moment no one will forget.

Receiving the ball, he set off with one goal in mind – to score his first try. Cheered on by supporters around the pitches, he changed direction, crossed more than one pitch in his determination, and eventually grounded the ball before celebrating with a triumphant punch in the air.

The smile on his face said everything.

Later in the day, he scored another try, showing even greater confidence as he found his way through the defence. By the final games, he was actively supporting his teammates, making tag attempts and fully embracing every part of the game. Even during the breaks, his enthusiasm never faded as he ran around the pitches making the most of every opportunity.

His parent reflected:

“For us, this is what inclusion in rugby looks like at its very best. It is not about perfect execution or winning games. It is about creating an environment where every child can take part, learn, grow in confidence, experience success and leave feeling valued as a member of the team.”

The day clearly left a lasting impression. As his parent put it, “The fact that he was fast asleep before the M40 was reached on the journey home tells its own story about just how much he enjoyed the day.”

We’re incredibly grateful to every volunteer, coach, official, supporter and participant who helps create these unforgettable experiences. Together, they make Tag Fest a place where every child can discover the joy of rugby, build confidence and create memories that last a lifetime.
