In Memory Of Peter Squires

England and British and Irish Lion winger Peter Squires sadly passed away on the 21st of January 2026 at the age of 74.

Peter was a dedicated supporter and member of Wooden Spoon for many years. He attended and supported many functions and was always willing to offer his help in promoting the values of Wooden Spoon. So in 2020 on behalf of the Yorkshire Region, he opened a holiday home for disadvantaged children at the White Cross Bay Holiday Park in Windermere and attended many more openings.

We are grateful for the £800 donation given in memory of Peter at his funeral.

His sporting achievements were legendary. A splendid athlete who will be remembered for his speed on the wing for England at rugby and between the wickets and in the field for Yorkshire. He played 49 first class matches for Yorkshire scoring 1271 runs.

However, it was rugby which provided him with his greatest success, representing England 29 times during the 1970’s. In recognition for his success and ability, he was selected for the 1977 Lions Tour of New Zealand and played in the first Test of that series against the All Blacks.

At Club level he played both cricket and rugby for Ripon and Harrogate, and after he retired from playing, he became a huge supporter of sport and rugby in the local area.

For someone who had achieved so much in sport, he remained incredibly humble and unassuming throughout his life. He will be sorely missed, but he leaves behind a legacy as a true sporting icon in his native Yorkshire.
