Newcastle Falcons Legends Take on The Speed Project to Raise Funds for Wooden Spoon
A group of former Newcastle Falcons players is taking on one of the most grueling and notorious races in the world—The Speed Project. Dubbed the “Fight Club” of the running world, this event is famous for its lack of ‘rules’, spectators, and even a fixed route. Since its inception in 2013, The Speed Project has attracted runners worldwide, offering them an unparalleled opportunity to push their physical and mental limits in a mad dash through unpredictable terrain.
The Newcastle Falcons Legends team, comprising some of the club’s most celebrated former players, is set to tackle this extreme challenge, a relay that is over 400km (250miles) completed in just 48 hrs meaning they’ll be running the equivalent of a 1.5 marathons each to raise funds for Wooden Spoon, a charity committed to helping children across the UK and Ireland. The team includes:
- Michael Young: Former player for Newcastle Falcons, Leicester Tigers, Bath Rugby, Toulon, and Gloucester. Young also represented England 7s and Saxons.
- Will Welch: Known as the youngest and most capped captain in Newcastle Falcons’ history, Welch brings his leadership and determination to the team.
- Alex Tait: A stalwart of the Falcons, Tait is ready to bring his experience to this new arena.
- Mark Wilson: A 2019 Rugby World Cup finalist with England, Wilson’s tenacity on the field will be invaluable in this endurance race.
- Tom Catterick: Another Falcons veteran, Catterick’s agility and speed will be key assets.
- Perry Alexander: With experience at Newcastle Falcons and Sale Sharks, Alexander rounds out this formidable team.
Having shared numerous challenges on the rugby field, these former players have found themselves yearning for that familiar sense of camaraderie and competition in retirement. The Speed Project presented the perfect opportunity to reignite their drive, challenging them to push their limits once more.
The Speed Project is not just any race. With no official start date, no designated course, and no formal registration, it demands not only physical endurance but also strategic planning and sheer willpower. For the Newcastle Falcons Legends, it’s a test of grit, teamwork, and the same unwavering spirit that once made them rugby champions.
“Through this challenge, we aim to support Wooden Spoon, a charity deeply connected to the rugby community. Wooden Spoon is dedicated to ensuring that children, regardless of their background, have access to the best opportunities in life. For us, the athletes, rugby has provided a foundation for growth and success from a young age, and now, through this race, we hope to give back to a cause that truly resonates with us.” – explains Michael Young.
