Ballymena Bears Wooden Spoon Cabin Officially Opens

Ballymena Bears SEN Tag Rugby club over the last 11 years has grown not only in numbers but also the amount of kit and equipment they have gathered up. The idea therefore of getting a cabin built which would not only serve as an administrative base but also as a store, was met enthusiastically by all the coaches, parents and players. Planning and fundraising began over a year ago but it was not without the grant of financial support from the Ulster Branch, Wooden Spoon the children’s charity of rugby that the dream could become a reality.

Building work began by “Timberworks Ltd” in July 23 and continued over the Summer months with the finishing touches of patio and kitchen area being completed mid-August, just in time for the start of the 2023/2024 new rugby season.

Saturday 2nd September was selected as the opening date and guests invited. Over the past 3 months sunny days have not been commonplace, so it was with great relief that on opening the curtains in the morning, the sun was shining and no rain expected for the day.  Ballyduff Silver Band provided a superb musical backdrop to the event and a Chairman’s Select team of well-known Ulster and Ireland players a formidable opposition to the Bears tag rugby players.

The cabin was then officially opened by Willie-John McBride CBE president of the Wooden Spoon Ulster in front of a packed crowd and excited Bears team.

Ballymena Bears would like to thank its supporters, the charity and all those who contributed to the construction of their new base without whom the project would not have been possible.
