MONEY raised by cyclists taking part in Wooden Spoon Eastern Counties’ Club Together ride is helping to put children in the saddle of a different kind.
Sponsorship secured by the fundraiser, which takes place from September 8-10th, has been used to purchase Moss – a 12-year-old Shire Clydesdale cross – for the Pakefield Riding School near Lowestoft in Suffolk.
The Riding for the Disabled centre holds up to 80 sessions a week for riders with a disability and Wooden Spoon’s new recruit will help share the load of his stablemates.
Welcoming Moss to his new home, Tess Hardy, the school’s owner, said: “Our riders range from toddlers to pensioners and we have a team of horses specifically for these sessions.
“We needed a big heavy horse as we have riders of all weights and sizes and Moss is perfect – a real softie.”
Youngsters from across East Anglia travel to use the riding school, which was founded more than 70 years ago, and the Chairman of Wooden Spoon Eastern Counties said he was delighted the children’s charity of rugby could contribute to its next chapter.
Seamus Farrelly said: “We were approached to see if we could find a heavy horse for the school and, thanks to Wooden Spoon’s partnership with the Riding for the Disabled Association, it was really easy to sort everything out.
“We also managed to harness support from the Great Yarmouth Haven Rotary Club, which is a relationship we hope will help us continue to support Moss and the riding school.”
