Phil Vickery MBE DL opened the new sensory room at Little Bridge House, Barnstaple

WOODEN Spoon Devon were honoured to have Phil Vickery MBE DL open their latest project at Little Bridge House, Barnstaple. Little Bridge House is one of three hospices that make up Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW). After the official handover ceremony, our photographs show just much the children (and Phil) enjoyed his visit and the chance to throw a ball.

The previous sensory facilities had been in constant use for the last 20 years and were in serious need of refurbishment. Thanks to our donation of £15,000 along with others, they have been able to completely refurbish the room into a high tech multi-sensory play room.

Tracy Freame, Head of Care at CHSW said: “Multi-sensory stimulation plays a vital role in meeting specialised therapeutic needs for the children. We are simply thrilled to be able to have such an amazing room to enhance the care and experiences we can give the children at Little Bridge House, and we hope that our families will continue to enjoy it for many years to come.”

“The fantastic generous donation we received has enabled us to bring our facilities completely up-to-date and it’s a stunning asset to our hospice.”

The sensory room features an array of specialist equipment including coloured bubble tubes, fibre optic cascades, integrated acoustic systems and sparkling lights. All the equipment is programmable so that individual children can have their own settings and the impact of its use is tremendous.

Sensory stimulation is just one of the therapies available at the hospice, which provides care and support for children with life-limiting conditions and their families from across Devon. CHSW delivers a range of services including short breaks, specialist play, music therapy, activities for siblings, palliative and emergency care, end of life care, bereavement support and specialist medical care.
