New Weight Carrying Horse at Thornton Rose Riding for Disabled
EdinburghThe new Weight Carrying Horse at Thornton Rose Riding for Disabled, a Health & Wellbeing project involving the introduction of a weight-carrying horse, in Edinburgh, has been awarded a grant of £6,500. This project, aimed at enabling more riders with disabilities to access therapeutic riding sessions, is set to have a significant impact on the local community.
This project supports the mission of Thornton Rose Riding for Disabled, which has provided riding opportunities for people of all ages and disabilities since 2004. Based at Thornton Farm in Rosewell, the group offers a safe, stimulating, and therapeutic environment where riding becomes a powerful recreational and physical activity.
This new Health & Wellbeing project will provide an essential resource — a horse specifically suited to carrying larger or heavier riders — ensuring that sessions are inclusive and accessible to all. The project creates a supportive environment designed to help individuals improve confidence, balance, coordination, and emotional wellbeing through equine therapy.
The project was generously funded by a grant from Wooden Spoon, the children’s charity of rugby. Wooden Spoon supports Thornton Rose Riding for Disabled’s commitment to creating inclusive spaces that foster personal development, wellbeing, and joy through physical activity.
