New Sensory Space at Maudsley and Bethlem Hospital School

Kent

This new Sensory Space project at Maudsley and Bethlem Hospital School, in Kent, has been awarded a grant of £4,555 from Wooden Spoon Kent.

This project, which will transform a currently unusable area on the Bethlem school site, is designed to provide pupils with an outdoor space for both mindfulness and learning. The development will include a seated outdoor learning area, a sensory path, growing spaces, and opportunities to promote sustainability. Together, these additions will create a calm and purposeful environment, supporting pupils’ wellbeing alongside their education.

Maudsley and Bethlem Hospital School offers a supportive, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment dedicated to pupils’ academic, emotional, and social development. Employing a student-centred approach, the school celebrates diversity, builds resilience, and equips each child with the life skills needed to thrive. Within the unique context of a hospital setting, the school is committed to prioritising pupils’ safety and wellbeing, whilst advocating for a society that embraces mental health and challenges stigma.

This new sensory space, generously funded by a Wooden Spoon charity grant, will provide pupils with opportunities to learn, reflect, and grow in an outdoor setting. Wooden Spoon supports Maudsley and Bethlem Hospital School in its dedication to creating environments that foster both wellbeing and learning.
