Every new school year is a major event for children, but for those attending school for the first time it can feel very daunting and unfamiliar. Pear Tree School, a special school for children and young people with severe and profound and multiple learning difficulties, recognises this and work hard to make the start of this journey very special and personal to each child.

In late September, they welcomed the children into their recently refurbished and extended Seedlings class, with its inspiring and newly created playground which was partially funded by a grant of £25,000 from Wooden Spoon Lancashire.

With the children settled and enjoying the surroundings they thought it befitting to open the doors to all the organisations and supporters who helped the school raise the funds to develop this much needed stimulating facility.

It was a great opportunity to witness first hand the real impact of our support and how it will make a real difference to children facing this challenging stage in their development.

Despite the torrential rain, everyone was able to see the children play undercover, move freely between their classroom and the extended play space. In between the downpours, we watched the children stay active and test themselves on the new equipment and witnessed how they can play safely and have fun.

In the classroom they interacted with a range of toys and games that stimulate early learning, and the visitors observed how it was more comfortable for the children to be able to spread out and experience group activities.

The open day guest attendance was high, and reflected the affection and level of support from the local community; so it was only befitting that an opening ceremony conducted by the school’s Patron, Mr Bobby Ball, took place with the children playing happily around him.

Pear Tree School Business School Manager, Fiona Wafer, said “Without this financial support and generosity, our extension would not have been possible so we were thrilled that so many could come along and share this moment.”

“We would like to thank everyone that has supported this project. You have made a real difference and your support has helped us provide a legacy facility that will be of benefit for many years for numerous children and parents looking for a reassuring place to start school.”
