Hertfordshire Annual Golf Day Raises Over £7,500

On the 1st October, a beautiful autumnal day, 72 golfers competed at the 118 year old undulating and tree lined parkland course at Knebworth Golf Club. They enjoyed refreshments on the course and the chance to take on Ady, the trick shot pro from Ace Golf, at the signature par 314th. Whilst players played their ordinary shots to the green, Ady gave them the choice of him playing from very high tees, whilst either standing on a gym ball or one legged, facing backwards on a step ladder. Or they could ask him to bounce the golf ball on a paving slab before hitting it on the volley. Only 8 of the 72 managed to land their ball inside his on the green!

The overall winners were Simon Law, Dave & Ian Reynolds and Andy Sharpe whilst the winners of the equally prestigious Wooden Spoon for the most golf were Richard Dent, Warwick Wilson, Ros Goss & Bill Wiggins.

Once the golf was finished, the 72 golfers were joined by another 19 guests who were then privileged to witness a captivating short talk by Lesley, the Head of Heathlands School For Deaf Children, based in St. Albans, and the largest such school in the UK, where Hertfordshire Region had recently funded an outdoor classroom. Lesley gave her presentation, on the difficulties faced by deaf children and the benefits of the support from Wooden Spoon, by sign language, which was then relayed to the audience by a British Sign Language interpreter.

A sumptuous 3 course meal with wine followed together with musical entertainment, culminating in a communal singsong with songsheets, provided by Karenza Lily-May (accordion, guitar & vocals) with Kevin Brinn (Irish guitar & vocals).

All the above was against the background of usual fundraising activities which raised the magnificent amount of £7,500 for future projects to help children and young people living with a disability or facing disadvantage throughout Hertfordshire.
