A Wooden Spoon Karting Extravaganza : Adrenaline, Break-neck Brinkmanship Rivalry and Camaraderie, raising over £2,000
Engines roared, adrenaline surged and the competitive spirit was in full swing as Wooden Spoon Chilterns returned to Absolutely Karting in Maidenhead for its annual charity race evening.
Eleven teams went head to head in a thrilling 90-minute endurance race, combining speed, teamwork and tactical driver changes with a shared purpose: helping children and young people with disabilities or facing disadvantage by raising over £2,000.
With drivers swapping places throughout the race, success depended on more than a fast lap. Maintaining momentum, managing changeovers and working together were all part of the challenge. Wooden Spoon’s values of passion, integrity, teamwork and fun were evident throughout the evening.
Congratulations went to Harry Smith’s team, who once again took the chequered flag and carried off the trophy. The returning winners gave everyone something to aim for, with strong competition this year from the University of Surrey.
The Surrey Stags, captained by Oscar Lockett, secured the runners-up spot. Their second-place finish brought a university challenge to the event and gave the reigning champions another team to watch when they next defend their title.
Beyond the results, the evening celebrated a partnership that continues to make a difference locally. Wooden Spoon Chilterns has funded two specially adapted, two-seat karts and a hoist at Absolutely Karting, helping children living with a disability or facing disadvantage enjoy the thrill of the track.
These facilities open up an activity that many might otherwise be unable to experience. Sharing a kart offers the exhilaration of racing alongside another driver, while the hoist helps make access possible. It is a wonderful example of fundraising creating opportunities, building confidence and bringing smiles.
That connection made Absolutely Karting a particularly fitting venue. The teams were supporting a charity whose contribution could be seen at the very track where they were enjoying themselves.
A huge thank you goes to Ollie Phillips for encouraging so many people to attend and participate, and to Chris Henkey, Martin Sanders and Colin Higgs for their support in making the evening a success.
Thanks also to Absolutely Karting Maidenhead, every driver and everyone who helped organise the event. Each played a part in bringing people together for a worthwhile cause.
Harry Smith’s team took home the trophy, but the evening’s impact extends beyond the podium. The energy, generosity and friendly rivalry will help Wooden Spoon Chilterns give more local children opportunities to participate, experience something exciting and share in the fun.
