Wooden Spoon Marauders gear up for 2021 Sevens Season
Wooden Spoon Marauders match review from Coach, Keith Boatman
LAST Saturday 12 June, the Wooden Spoon Marauders Men’s team attended their first warm up tournament at Maidenhead RFC.
The side fielded a completely new lineup playing the newly adjusted laws of the game. This season, there are no scrums and mauls and the game is a lot faster as a result.
Played on a hot day, each half was limited to 5 minutes instead of the traditional 7 minutes. The tournament consisted of many of the sides playing in the Super 7s Series 2021, all of whom were experimenting with their lineups.
The men equipped themselves well, finishing a respectable 7th position on the day and winning the 7th/8th place final beating Apache in a close fought contest.
On Saturday 19 June, the Men are playing at Chiswick in the first tournament of the season which looks to be an exciting opportunity to see a new group of players perform. Again, the side will field a new lineup that sees seven changes to last week ensuring that everyone has had a run out prior to the series squad being announced next week.
This Sunday 20 June, the Women’s team attend their first tournament again with a new lineup at East Grinstead Rugby club. The Women have an exciting squad this season that features a number of Premier 15 players, young age group internationals and established internationals.
Nic Evans, the Wooden Spoon Marauders Women’s head coach said “we must be one of the top sides in the Super 7’s Series this year and will probably field two squads next week at Aldershot in the series opener looking for maximum points”.
DoR Keith Boatman commented “we have a wonderful coaching team that will really develop both the men’s and women’s squads, and we have high hopes that a number of our young players will represent their country in the 2022 Commonwealth games in Birmingham”.
The team are well supported by analytic video coaches and medical and S&C support staff all with the help of our kit provider O’Neills and our kit sponsors Irwin Mitchell. The team are playing seven tournaments this year and aim to help build awareness of the Wooden Spoon Charity for children with disabilities or facing disadvantage.
