Market Harborough RFC is first Leicestershire partner club
ON SUNDAY 17th December, members of Market Harborough Rugby Football Club welcomed Wooden Spoon the children’s charity of rugby as an official charity partner. The club is the first one in Leicestershire to become an official partner club. Over the coming years the club aims to support the charity with a variety of fundraising activities, which will go towards funding local projects in Leicestershire that help children and young people with disabilities or facing disadvantage.
Market Harborough joins a growing family of rugby clubs across the UK and Ireland who have joined the charity’s exciting Partner Club Programme providing an opportunity for rugby clubs and Wooden Spoon to work together to change disabled or disadvantaged children’s lives and secure mutual long-term gains through joint fundraising initiatives.
The partnership was launched with the sale of the charity’s signature colour bobble hats. More than 100 of Harborough’s mini and junior players and parents braved the chilly December weather on Sunday 17th December wearing their new bobble hats. The club’s Christmas mince pie and mulled wine sale also added to the funds raised.
Chairman of the mini and junior section Mike Fletcher said “We heard about the work of the Wooden Spoon and how it improves the lives of children and young people less fortunate than most of our members. As one the biggest mini and junior rugby sections in the Midlands we are delighted to be the first club in Leicestershire to become an official partner. We are delighted to have raised £1,200 for the charity with our first event. We hope to be the first of many clubs locally to support this cause.”
Simon Whitaker of Leicestershire Wooden Spoon added, “It is great to have the support of Market Harborough RFC and the wider rugby community for the life changing projects that we fund. We are delighted to be working with the Club and look forward to a long and healthy partnership.”
