Marauders Fun in the Sunshine Sevens
THE 60th Sunshine Sevens Tournament took place at East Grinstead this year, yes you guessed it, in sunshine! After a cold and wet day last year all of the teams were able to get into their stride and open up the running side of their game.
As part of our build up for Kinsale and the Super Sevens Series the Wooden Spoon Marauders had a few new faces and combinations to try out. the side started slowly losing their first match to Apache and then winning the next two, beating a very good Samurai side along the way. This took the team through to the quarter finals where they met the eventual winners Irish Wolfhounds. The Wolfhounds were excellent and the Wooden Spoon coaching team had identified them early in the tournament as the team to beat. However the Marauders were not able to settle early on in the game and lost 2 tries very quickly losing 33 – 7 at the final whistle. Wolfhounds went on to win the finals by over 30 points and were indeed well deserved winners.
As always the players and coaches looked at the positives out of the day and what would be needed to take forward to next week. The squad has new players who will make their mark and regulars who will be on the team sheet for Kinsale and the forthcoming Super Sevens Series. We have a very strong squad lined up for Kinsale and are looking forward to defending teh Elite Mens title along with enjoying a little bit of Irish hospitality. Fergus Slattery, the great Irish International, British Lion and Wooden Spoon Ambassador who will be there to support the Wooden Spoon Marauders on the day.
