Building for the Future, a charity, set up 12 years ago, supports children and young people living with a disability with a specialist play and therapy centre and has relocated to a new site in Reading as demand for its services has become so high that it has outgrown its current site.

The organisation aims to plug gaps in publicly available disability care by providing a safe, inclusive space for children and young people, giving their families respite.

Building for the Future provide auxiliary therapy, social events and family support.

“We’re supporting close to 1,000 children over the course of a year now, but the existing building has become tired and too small, so we embarked on the Tree House Project and were delighted that Wooden Spoon have supported us in the provision of a new high tech sensory room which has been so well received by all the children.” the charity’s Chief Executive Jane Holmes said.

Martin Sanders, Chair of Wooden Spoon Chilterns opened the new Wooden Spoon sensory room, Chris Henkey, Head of Projects Wooden Spoon Chilterns, who has been involved in our support for the project was also in attendance. The whole Tree House Project building was opened by Sir Stephen Timms, Minister of State for Social Security and Disability.

Martin Sanders said “Building for the Future objectives align exactly with those of Wooden Spoon, where we aim to give children and young people the chance to play, to learn, to be safe and thrive. The new Wooden Spoon sensory room at The Tree House, in the wonderful new facilities on the Thames Valley Park provide all those chances. Sensory rooms provide controlled environments with customised lighting, sounds, and textures that support emotional regulations, lower anxiety and improves focus”
