Oaklands School Receive Grant of over £28,300 from Wooden Spoon Edinburgh for a Soft Play Sensory Room

Edinburgh

Oaklands Therapy at Oaklands School, Edinburgh, a Specialist Equipment & Facilities project focusing on a Soft Play Sensory Room in Scotland, has been awarded a grant of over £28,300. This initiative, aimed at supporting children with profound and multiple learning disabilities, is set to make a meaningful impact on the local community by giving children a chance to play, explore and develop in a safe and engaging environment.

About Oaklands Therapy

Located in Edinburgh, Oaklands School provides a significantly adapted and supportive learning environment for children and young people aged 3 to 18 with profound and multiple learning disabilities, often alongside complex health care needs. The school benefits from on-site multi-disciplinary therapy and medical teams working in partnership with education staff to help every learner reach their full potential.

This new specialist facility introduces a soft play sensory room designed to provide a calm, immersive and stimulating environment that supports sensory development, physical movement and communication skills. Sensory spaces are widely recognised as vital for children with additional needs, helping to reduce anxiety, improve focus and create opportunities for meaningful interaction.

Funded by a generous Wooden Spoon Charity grant, this specialist equipment and facility aligns with Wooden Spoon’s commitment to creating inclusive, nurturing environments that foster well-being, independence and growth.

Oaklands School already has a strong reputation for its carefully designed sensory learning environments, where pupils engage with multi-sensory experiences that bring joy, curiosity and connection. One visitor described the school as “a unique, wonderful learning environment where every design detail has been made with the students’ best interests in mind”, writing for Multi-Sensory Environments & Neurodiversity.

With the addition of this new soft play sensory room, even more children will have access to engaging therapeutic play, supporting both their development and overall wellbeing.
