Sensory and Calm Room Project at Capella House School Receives £17,000 Grant
SurreyA new Sensory Space project at Capella House School in Surrey has been awarded a grant of £17,000 from Wooden Spoon Surrey. The project, focusing on the development of a dedicated sensory and calm room, is set to make a meaningful impact on the school community by giving children a chance to thrive.
The initiative will provide pupils with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) a safe and supportive space where they can regulate emotions, reduce anxiety and develop confidence through sensory-based learning and therapeutic support. Opened on the 24th March 2026, the room is an important part of the school’s holistic approach to supporting children and young people.
About Capella House School
Capella House School is a unique special school for children and young people with Speech, Language and Communication Needs. Opened in 2019, the school has grown into a vibrant and welcoming community with purpose-built facilities designed to help pupils achieve their full potential. The school supports children aged 4 to 19 through a personalised curriculum that balances academic progress with social, emotional and therapeutic development.
The importance of specialist therapeutic support is central to the school’s ethos. Capella House provides integrated speech and language therapy, occupational therapy and emotional wellbeing support throughout the school day, helping pupils overcome barriers to learning and communication.
The new sensory and calm room will provide a calming, nurturing environment designed to support pupils who may experience anxiety, sensory overload or difficulties with emotional regulation. Through interactive sensory equipment and quiet reflection spaces, children will be able to develop coping strategies, build resilience and feel more confident within the school environment.
Funded by a generous Wooden Spoon Charity grant, this Sensory Space aligns with Wooden Spoon’s commitment to creating inclusive environments that foster wellbeing, confidence and growth. The project will help ensure pupils at Capella House School have the opportunity to flourish both academically and emotionally in a setting tailored to their needs.
