Monkleigh Primary School gives children the chance to thrive with new equipment

Devon

Monkleigh Primary School in Devon has been awarded a £7,500 Wooden Spoon grant towards new specialist equipment, helping to create more opportunities for children to be active, develop their confidence and enjoy learning through play.

The project, which officially opened on 10 September 2026, provides new equipment designed to support children during PE, playtimes and outdoor activities, giving pupils more opportunities to develop their physical skills, work together and build confidence.

Located in the rural village of Monkleigh, near Bideford in North Devon, the school has been at the heart of its local community since it was established in 1875. Today, Monkleigh Primary School welcomes children from two to 11 years old and provides a nurturing environment where every child is known, valued and encouraged to flourish.

With around 100 pupils, the school places a strong emphasis on children’s wellbeing, personal development and physical activity. Its extensive outdoor facilities include a large playing field, running track and Forest School area, alongside a strong programme of PE, sports clubs and active play.

The new equipment adds to these opportunities, helping children to stay active while developing important skills such as coordination, teamwork, independence and confidence.

The project also supports Monkleigh Primary School’s commitment to inclusion. The school describes itself as fully committed to providing inclusive facilities, with a focus on ensuring children can access opportunities that support their learning, development and wellbeing.

This new equipment is another way of creating an environment where children can be active, learn through play and develop the skills they need to thrive.
