GUST Independent School Receives Funding from Wooden Spoon Northumberland for New Sensory Space

Northumberland

A new sensory space at GUST Independent School, a Sensory Space project focusing on a quiet room in Northumberland, has been awarded a grant of £7,000. This initiative, aimed at supporting children with additional needs who may struggle in traditional learning environments, is set to make a meaningful impact on the local community by giving children a chance to play in a calm, safe, and nurturing space.

About the Sensory Space at GUST Independent School

GUST Independent School is an independent special school supporting children aged 6–17 with a wide range of additional needs that may not be met within mainstream education. The school provides both primary and secondary education in a warm and welcoming environment, where learners are encouraged to re-engage with education and supported to reach their full potential.

This new Sensory Space project, opening on 1st May 2026, provides a calming and supportive environment designed to help pupils regulate their emotions, reduce anxiety, and feel safe. The quiet room will offer a dedicated space where children can take time away from overwhelming situations, enabling them to return to learning more focused and confident.

Funded by a generous Wooden Spoon Charity grant, this sensory space aligns with Wooden Spoon’s commitment to creating inclusive, nurturing environments that foster well-being, resilience, and personal growth. For many pupils, access to a space like this can be transformative—helping them to engage more fully in school life and build essential social and emotional skills.
