Celebrating International Women’s Day: Empowering Women to Join the Wooden Spoon Community

On this International Women’s Day, we honour the remarkable women who have shaped our world and continue to inspire future generations. At Wooden Spoon, the children’s charity of rugby, we believe in the power of community and the unique contributions women bring to our mission. We invite women from all walks of life to join us in transforming the lives of children and young people with disabilities or facing disadvantage. Here’s how you can get involved:

1. Participate in Rugby Events

Rugby is at the heart of Wooden Spoon, and we encourage women to take part in our rugby-related activities. Whether you’re an experienced player or new to the sport, there’s a place for you. For instance, the upcoming Reading RFC Race Night 2025 on the 21st March which offers a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in the rugby community.

2. Volunteer Your Time and Skills

Volunteering is a rewarding way to make a tangible difference. Our volunteers are integral to the success of Wooden Spoon’s vision, and a small commitment from you could make a huge difference to local children. Whether it’s assisting at events or fundraising your involvement is invaluable. If volunteering for Wooden Spoon sounds like something you would enjoy, we would love to hear from you. Please get in touch by emailing volunteer@woodenspoon.org.uk.

3. Join a Regional Committee

Across the UK and Ireland, regional volunteer groups work tirelessly to raise funds for children and young people within their local communities. By joining a regional committee, you can collaborate with like-minded individuals, plan events, and spearhead initiatives that directly benefit local projects. To find a committee near you, visit our regional pages.

4. Support Women-Centric Initiatives

We are proud to support initiatives that focus on women’s participation in rugby. For example, Maddy’s Mark is a charity dedicated to supporting the mental well-being of girls and women by building resilience, confidence, and camaraderie. Through funding school programs and partnerships with clubs, the organisation works to make rugby accessible to all who wish to play, fostering both physical and emotional well-being.

5. Attend Events and Challenges

From charity golf days to bike rides and lunches with rugby legends, Wooden Spoon offers a variety of exciting events. Participating in these events is a great way to support our cause, meet new people, and have fun.

One exciting opportunity for women is The Longest Game, where female rugby players take on the challenge of setting a world record while raising vital funds for Wooden Spoon. It’s an inspiring way to push your limits, be part of rugby history, and support children and young people in need. Find out more and get involved here.
