Wooden Spoon Vets Triumph at Derby 10s
Last weekend the Wooden Spoon vets team were able to get together as a team to support Derby 10’s and the event’s partner charities The 100 World Legends Charity Project, Derby Rugby Club (DRFC), Children First Derby, Stand With Ukraine Foundation, me & dee charity and Safe and Sound Group.
The day started with a pretty mediocre performance against Matlock drawing 19-19. However from there on out the vets were on a roll! The team made hard work of the next game against Derby Bucks but won by three tries to two. In the words of Rugby Manager Matt “our performance versus the 100 World Legends was legendary”.
The vets made it to the Semi Final before cruising into the final against Derby Vets. It was a cracking, tense match with rugby as the winner. Skipper Crouchy lifted the trophy and with that the celebrations commenced! Some excellent debuts, great commitment and outstanding performances from all. There were three (four if you count a three second cameo) father and son partnerships which were particularly special, as well as a top effort from Mark Kane who travelled from close to the arctic circle.
Congratulations to the “men of the tournament”: Andrew Soloman, Arron Jarvis, Crouchy Jnr, Mark Bell and our gas-man Syan Sachdev. The group were supported by many travelling (and non travelling) family members who cheered the team on and enjoyed the rugby and good weather in equal part.
Thanks go to Richard Beevers for organising the Derby 10s event over the weekend.
