England winger Mike Slemen has passed away aged 69
WOODEN Spoon is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mike Sleman.
Mike was the Honorary President of Wooden Spoon Merseyside and an outstanding rugby player who was part of the Grand Slam-winning team of 1980.
He played club rugby for Liverpool, represented Lancashire, North of England and England, where he gained 31 caps between 1976 and 1984. Mike also toured South Africa with the British and Irish Lions in 1980.
In his role as Honorary President, Mike attended many fundraising events including the hugely popular Merseyside Christmas Lunch, which has helped the regional branch raise more than £350,000 to fund community projects supporting children and young people with disabilities or facing disadvantage.
Wooden Spoon Merseyside Chairman, Stan Bagshaw described him as “a true gentleman, great family man and one of the finest wing men, that England ever produced. Mike will be sadly missed by all in the Rugby fraternity.”
