Burton RFC host Wooden Spoon Challenge Match
Burton RFC played host to Hinckley RFC at Peel Croft in the Wooden Spoon Charity Challenge match as part of their pre-season preparations. The match was preceded with a minute’s applause in honour of Robert Walton who played for Hinkley but was tragically killed in an accident while recently holidaying in France.
Both clubs fielded strong teams which made for a lively encounter, with Hinckley finally coming out on top and winning the Challenge Shield which will now be played for annually. One of the stranger highlights of the day was an auction for a life size cardboard cut out of The Queen which raised a generous amount towards the final total!
West Midlands committee member Trevor Jenkins thanked the hosts Burton RFC and Trent Trophies, who sponsored the shield, adding: “This inaugural event is a fantastic start to a regular annual fixture and we look forward to the next one.”
Money raised on the day will go to fund projects for disadvantaged and disabled children in West Midlands and Staffordshire. Thank you to everyone who played and came down and supported!
