Stew Mel Lions celebrate year of fundraising
WOODEN Spoon Scotland representatives were delighted to visit a sun kissed Inverleith along with a former Scotland legend and Edinburgh Rugby stars on Sunday 6th May to congratulate Stew Mel Lions on their amazing fund-raising during 2017/18.
At their cracking annual end of season lunchtime BBQ at the famous Edinburgh ground, the youth section of the Stewart’s Melville club presented Wooden Spoon with a cheque for £4,000 to help with projects going forward.
The fantastic amount was raised thanks to a number of events and there were around 200 enthusiastic young rugby players and their parents there to witness the handover and celebrate a great campaign for the Lions on and off the pitch.
Everyone was very excited to have former Scotland and British & Irish Lions player Finlay Calder in attendance. He has just been elected chairman of Stewart’s Melville and the 60-year-old of course played with distinction for them during his playing days and earned 34 caps for Scotland in the back-row between 1986 and 1991.
During that time the tough tackler also skippered the Lions in Australia in 1989.
Alongside Calder on the day were Edinburgh Rugby front-row men Darryl Marfo and Elliot Millar-Mills. The duo were very impressed by the Lions set-up and enjoyed hearing more about the work Wooden Spoon does to help young people through rugby.
