Wooden Spoon Devon Vets Rugby Team Go On Tour

FOLLOWING on from Wooden Spoon Devon signing up to Vets Fest this year, Tim Edbrooke has set up an embryonic Devon Vets Touring team with the idea that they will play matches against various clubs through the season and hopefully there will be spin-offs with other benefits.

Tim picked up on the grapevine that Littlehampton RFC (on tour) had a match cancelled and so he contacted them and agreed to raise a side to play them at Topsham RFC on 23rd April. However, because Wooden Spoon Devon don’t yet have a standing squad and it was only a weeks’ notice they were unable to pull together a Devon Spoon squad of 23 so they ‘borrowed’ a few friends from Topsham RFC, including Gareth Williams the Exeter Chiefs HITZ officer, leader of prize winning Exeter Chiefs HITZ squad, which is now based at Topsham RFC (just up the road from Sandy Park).

In the end they fielded a ‘Wooden Spoon’ team resplendent in their new kit! They had never played together before and put up a creditable performance on the day. As expected all had a good time.

Tim Edbrooke said

“The newly formed Wooden Spoon Devon Vets joined forces with Topsham RFC to play a game against Littlehampton RFC who were touring from Sussex. Despite a number of unavailabilities due to injury and other commitments, the combined side fielded a squad of 21 players aged 19-59 who put up a commendable show, finally going down 17-12.”

The Wooden Spoon Devon vets team will be playing at this year’s Vets Fest on 8th October this year.  Find out more information about Vets Fest here.
