Fiery funds raised at Surrey’s Curry Lunch

WOODEN Spoon Surrey held their third annual Rugby Clubs’ Curry Lunch, hosted by partner club Old Reigatian RFC.

140 members and supporters of local rugby clubs attended, with Surrey’s Honorary President, John Inverdale, providing his customary splendid contribution as master of ceremonies.

Wales and British & Irish Lions legend, John Taylor, made a hugely entertaining speech covering various aspects of his journalistic career. He also mentioned playing experiences alongside superstars such as Gareth Edwards, Barry John, John Dawes and Gerald Davies.

The two Johns then discussed the recently completed Rugby World Cup and gave some insights into the goings on in Japan.

Unknown to John Taylor, we arranged for two surprise guests to join him, who are both members of Wooden Spoon. Ex-London Welsh, Wales and Lions teammate Mike Roberts, and his old Scottish international adversary, Alastair McHarg.

Wooden Spoon Surrey then received a surprise of their own. They were presented with a cheque for £500 from the recently formed Renascentur Surrey Rugby Masonic Lodge.

The Curry Lunch itself raised nearly £6,000 and 15 new members signed up. All in all it was a wonderful event all round!
