HRH Prince Harry opens new Youth Zone
WOODEN SPOON Eastern Counties was pleased to be asked to sponsor the equipment in the Sensory Room at the newly opened Youth Zone in Barking & Dagenham.
This initiative, opened by HRH Prince Harry Duke of Sussex, is the first of four in London and will add to 11 others that are located in the most under privileged areas in the country. The concept behind the zones is to provide top class facilities in a brand new purpose built building. The centres attract up to 350 children a day and among the 20 activities provided are: boxing, sports hall, fully equipped gym, rock climbing, music room and craft lessons.
The Wooden Spoon grant of £16,250 funded equipment for a high specification sensory room at Future Youth Zone, a world-class youth facility which opens its doors this month. The room offers young people with additional needs a relaxing space to spend their time within the Youth Zone, allowing them to move between engaging sport, social and creative activities to a place of calm when it gets too much. Specialist equipment within the room helps the young people develop basic life skills, providing a unique, safe and inspiring place where those with additional needs can spend their time.
A spokesperson from OnSide said: “A key benefit of the room is the respite it provides for families. Parents often struggle to find a youth centre for their children with disabilities, with not many of them having the requisite facilities or provision to respond to their additional needs. This sensory room not only provides a place where parents know their children are safe and getting the attention they require, but also that they are in an environment where they can learn and develop, which is often not available to them elsewhere. This respite is vital for the wellbeing of the family and enables parents to provide better support for their child.”
Wooden Spoon Eastern Counties chair, Seamus Farrelly added: “These centres are truly making a difference to the futures of young people in these deprived areas and we commend any other region to consider a donation to support an OnSide Youth Zone if they are planned near you.”
