An oasis for healthy living at Kobi Kitchen
A NEW outdoor playground at Kobi Nazrul community school was constructed in just one day by a group of enthusiastic volunteers. Kobi Nazrul is situated in the heart of Whitechapel, within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It is one of the most deprived boroughs in the country with 42% of the children attending entitled to free school meals compared to 25% nationally.
The build was thanks to a donation from Wooden Spoon which enabled the school to develop the area in front of the Kobi Cooking Bus into an oasis of healthy living. Last year, the bus was fitted with a kitchen and dining area which is used for breakfast club, cooking club and during lessons. The new outdoor space means the children can play, relax, grow lots of fresh healthy foods to cook on the bus and even go bug hunting on the honeycomb bug wall!
25 volunteers helped to complete the one-day project, which was led by the team from Fusion Community Initiatives. Many former rugby players including Wooden Spoon Vets XV from the Armistice Tour, LMAX Exchange Everest Rugby Challenge participants and Wooden Spoon London members without their generous donation of time and skill, it wouldn’t have been possible.
Our very sincere thanks to them all – you won’t meet a nicer group of people, they really enjoyed chatting to our curious children throughout the day (Kobi Nazrul).
The development of the outdoor space, growing areas and the cooking bus, form the Kobi Kitchen. The kitchen will support not only Kobi pupils but also the local community out of school hours.
