Hertfordshire Golf day at Knebworth
A BEAUTIFUL autumnal day welcomed the 60 golfers to this year’s Hertfordshire Golf Day at the rolling parkland course excellently presented by KnebworthGC.
Even allowing for the maximum three Mulligans which each golfer was “encouraged” to buy and raised £1120, there was some quite remarkable golf played. The format produced a par score of 88 against which four teams scored more than 100 stableford points. The winning team captained by Tony Fowler (37 off 21), Martin Gregory (40 off 11), Mike Walker (41 off 16), and no doubt benefiting from late replacement All Black legend Zinzan Brooke (36 off 8)… well he would be off eight wouldn’t he! amassed a staggering 111 points, some six points better than Peter Harvey, Mags Allison, Sudhir Dhanani, and Dipak Ghelani.
Herts Region Chairman’s wife Elke, assisted by friends Mick & Glynis, provided a varied and much used and appreciated refreshment tent from which the traditional bet hole was also administered, raising an impressive £450.
Once the golf was over, all were able to enjoy a pre-dinner drink (or two!) on the patio in the late sunshine, which is almost unheard of at Knebworth in October. Then into dinner, during which a further £615 raised by a sports question Heads and Tails and finally £890 from the raffle. The evening was enlivened and enhanced by the quite brilliant duo of tenor Martin Toal, with fiddle player Richard Saunders who ensured a vibrant atmosphere and encouragement for all to return on 4th October next year (so mark your diaries).
All in all a successful event for Wooden Spoon Hertfordshire with just over £4,000 raised. Our sincere thanks to all attending for their support and generosity.
