Camberley RFC Ndure Cycle for Wooden Spoon

Wilfred, the first 50 miler home.

THE INAUGURAL Wooden Spoon Ndure Cycle Challenge took place on Sunday 1 July in blistering sunshine starting and finishing at Camberley Rugby Club in the north of Surrey.

The Challenge followed two separate routes, the Core 50 mile route and the Family 25 mile route and after the first stage took us through some wonderful Surrey countryside. The biggest challenge of the day turned out not to be the route itself but the heat and sunshine which meant that the water van was on call with ice cold water on several occasions when bottles had run dry.

Special mention goes to Wilfred Birch who lead the 50 milers home and to Marti Jerrard who was called upon at the last minute to act as event mechanic which meant had to ride on the 25 mile route with the slower riders in the event. Marti’s skills were soon to be called on when a fairly major breakdown happened to Suzi Gearing’s bike but the gears were stripped down and replaced in just a few minutes when it had looked as though she wouldn’t be able to carry on. Great skills Marti!

So a great day on the road and we ask everyone who joined us and enjoyed themselves so much to spread the word for the Wooden Spoon and for next year’s event when we will also be opening entry up to other rugby clubs in the area!
