Celebrating the role of Women in Wine
The first ever Women in Wine fundraising event from Wooden Spoon London on 2 November celebrated the role females play in producing your favourite reds, whites and rosés. Hosted by England rugby legend, and Wooden Spoon Ambassador, Rachael Burford, the event raised £725 for the charity.
The evening celebrated the wonderful wines created by talented female winemakers from around the world. Guests, including Claire Purdy (former England and Wasps), were entertained by award-winning UK journalist and Saturday Kitchen Live wine expert Jane Parkinson, who educated the gathering on a selection of seven fine wines.
- Hattingley Valley Classic Reserve, Hampshire, England, NV
- Vina Leyda, Sauvignon Blanc, Leyda Valley, Chile, 2016
- Yealands Estate Pinot Gris, Awatere Valley, New Zealand, 2016
- Stargazer Riesling, Tasmania, Australia, 2015
- Cecchi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Italy, 2013
- Bogle Petite Sirah, California, USA, 2015
- Stargazer Pinot Noir, Tasmania, Australia, 2016
Wooden Spoon London Chairman, David Eck, commented that the evening linked a passion for supporting children and young people with disabilities or facing disadvantage with the passions and love that people have for wine and the passion that surrounds the amazing game of rugby.
Rachael Burford spoke of the power of rugby to transform lives, as it did her own, and of her historic World Cup encounters with England.
Additional activities during the evening included a prize draw with one lucky winner going home with a 2-night stay in a luxury suite for two people at Nikki Beach Resort & Spa in Bodrum, Turkey.
Our thanks go to vintners Enotria&Coe for its generous donation of fine wines for the evening, Zalto for the provision of stylish wine glasses and to The Star Tavern, Belgravia for the venue.
