Barns Green RFC raise funds in memory of young club member
Wooden Spoon Sussex attended Barns Green RFC Annual Tag 7-a-side in support of a young club member.
The Barns Green RFC Tag 7-a-side competition is held annually in memory of Simon Viney, a young club member with disabilities and learning difficulties who sadly passed away several years ago.
The event took place on Sunday 22nd May at Barns Green RFC, a small level 10 one-team club in a village in rural West Sussex.
Barns Green RFC has been supporting Wooden Spoon Sussex for several years.
There was a great turn out on the day with senior and junior male and female members of Barns Green RFC attending and other local organisations taking part, including Horsham RFC and staff and students from Christ’s Hospital School.
It was a fun day with great support from the local village and there was a great focus on fund-raising in memory of Simon with the proceeds shared between local charities, including Wooden Spoon Sussex.
The provisional total on the day raised was upwards of £6,000. The final total will be shared between Wooden Spoon and St Catherine’s Hospice.
In memory of Simon, the event has been organised each year by Simon’s parents, Guy ‘Popeye’ Viney (still a current player) and Karen Viney (Club Treasurer) of the club.
The whole day and the spirit of the event was a real testament to Barns Green RFC, to rugby in general with Wooden Spoon Sussex and most importantly, the children and young people it supports.
A special thanks to Barns Green RFC.
