Outdoor gym is a big hit with sporty students thanks to Wooden Spoon Leicestershire

Winstanley School are very happy to finally have an outdoor gym with thanks to Wooden Spoon Leicestershire.

The school is Leicestershire were able to complete the project with financial support from the Leicestershire region of the charity who kindly funded £15,000 towards the funding of the gym for the students to enjoy.

Winstanley is a small, caring school in the heart of the community, predominantly serving the families of Braunstone Town and those in Leicester City.

Each child is treated within a caring framework where adults know the child well. This means teachers are able to tailor the learning to the needs of each individual much better than in a larger school.

During the school holiday contractors were in school installing the equipment which they are hoping will keep students occupied at lunch time as well as improving fitness.

The idea for a gym originally came from the school’s student council who had seen equipment in local parks and thought that it would be beneficial to the school as they are a specialist sports’ college, with a number of successful school teams in a range of sports.

Initially pupils and parents of the school were prepared to try and raise they money, however it would have taken a number of years to raise what was required and thanks to Wooden Spoon Leicestershire the project is up and running and well ahead of schedule.

The gym features 10 pieces of equipment and is situated near the all-weather football pitches where students can ‘work-out’ during lunch times. Included in the gym are a cross-rider, rowing machine, chest press and an air-walker. The students will gain a lot of use out of the equipment, especially as the summer term approaches.

Malcolm Foulkes-Arnold, Leicestershire Chairman, said: “The Leicestershire Committee were thrilled to be able to realise Winstanley’s student council’s wish of the addition of a new outdoor gym to their other recreational facilities. We work hard on the Leicestershire Committee to helping young people in our region and we’re delighted that the gym has been such a big hit with the students.”
